FORMULA 600 CHALLENGE SERIES – 2015 SEASON
Back in November, 2012, we had the very first money race at the ARRC at Road Atlanta for this series as a way to draw attention to a brand new pro race series. For 2015, we have grown even more and it was our busiest to date. We have raced at Houston Motorsports Park, National Corvette Museum race track, Mid-Ohio, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Road Atlanta ARRC again for the finale. The series had a total of nineteen different drivers competing in 2015. Along with all these drivers the series saw its highest car count on two separate occasions. With all the buzz it looks like 2016 will be bringing even more drivers and larger fields. We have added more sponsors (most notably Honda Performance Development), we have paid out over $25,000 in race purses/tow funds, about $10,000 in individual race contingencies have been awarded and a $5,000 series points fund has been awarded.
The $5,000 Series Point Fund is awarded to those drivers who compete in four race weekends over the 2015 season based on the number of points won by each driver. Thus, for 2015, point’s awards were paid through 9th place.
Here are the final points standing for 2015:
1st Aaron Ellis 114
2nd Hunter Brayton 91
3rd Ryan Barth 86
4th Carl Maier 82
5th Sven de Vries 78
6th Clint McMahan 70
7th Craig Laprade 67
8th George Fox 40
9th Mo Makki 37
10th Zak Morvik 29
11th Katelyn Johnson 23
12th Jack Walbran 14
13th Barry Luterek 14
14th Tom Edwards 12
15th Ted Simmons 12
16th Ken Van Horn 10
17th Matt Strand 10
18th Dave Brown 8
19th Chris Ross 5
The drivers voted on two series awards for the 2015 season. The Mechanic of the Year is given to that person who has been most helpful to the most people at every race and this year Dan McMahan has been selected for a second time. Dan won a $50.00 check. The Hard Luck award is given to that driver who had the worst luck of all the drivers over the course of the season and for 2015 Katelyn Johnson was selected. Katelyn wins a traveling trophy plus a $50.00 check. New sponsor Speed Partz held a drawing among the drivers for their chain sprockets and Sven de Vries won three sprockets worth $186.00.

F600 CHALLENGE SERIES: FIRST TIME AT GINGERMAN RACEWAY
The F600 Challenge Series opened its 2016 season with its first time appearance at the recently repaved GingerMan Raceway near South Haven, MI. The open flowing track with its high speed sweepers makes for great racing. There were seven F600 Challenge drivers who raced this past weekend. For the 15 lap race #1 on Saturday, sim racer, Sven deVries, took the pole with a 1:34.7 with veteran 2015 Series champion, Aaron Ellis in second. In the race, these two immediately started dicing back and forth until Sven lost his drive chain on the 9th lap. The order of finish was Aaron Ellis, 1st, series rookie Barry Luterek, 2nd, Carl Maier, 3rd, Mo Makki, 4th, series rookie Jeff DeLong, 5th, series rookie Zak Morvik, 6th and Sven deVries, 7th.
For race #2 on Sunday, Sven deVries did not qualify so Aaron Ellis took the pole with a 1:35.6 followed by Barry Luterek in 2nd. In the race, Sven deVries, starting from the back of the pack, charged up to the front just behind Aaron Ellis by the 2nd corner. These two swapped the lead several times until near the end when Sven was struck by bad luck yet again with a failed motor. Aaron Ellis then cruised to 1st place for his second race win of the weekend; 2nd was Carl Maier, 3rd was Mo Makki, 4th was Sven deVries, 5th was Barry Luterek, 6th was Jeff DeLong and 7th was Zak Morvik.
After two races, the points standing are as follows:
Aaron Ellis 24
Carl Maier 22
Mo Makki 20
Barry Luterek 18
Sven deVries 16
Jeff DeLong 14
Zak Morvik 12
The Formula 600 Challenge moves on to Round #2 at the Road America June Sprints, June 17-19.
