Event Description

The Milhous Collection

The Milhous Museum, Boca Raton, Florida

February 24th & 25th, 2012

RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby’s, is delighted to present the renowned Milhous Collection during a multi-day sale in Boca Raton, Florida, February 24 – 25, 2012. Carefully amassed over the past 50 years by brothers Bob & Paul Milhous, the collection – regarded as one of the world’s finest private museums - features an unprecedented selection of mechanical musical instruments, automobiles and collectibles. Handpicked from around the world, items have a strong emphasis on rarity and world-class quality, providing an exclusive range of ownership opportunities for discerning collectors.

For automobile enthusiasts, the collection features over 30 magnificent motor cars, spanning from a selection of high-horsepower Brass era cars through to a superb roster of coachbuilt classics and historically-significant Indianapolis racing cars. Highlights include: a rare 1912 Oldsmobile Limited Tourabout; a Pebble Beach ‘Best of Show’ winning 1934 Packard Eight Convertible Victoria; and an exquisite 1911 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Seven Passenger Roi des Belges.

For those with a penchant for music, the collection boasts one of the world’s finest collections of mechanical musical instruments, highlighted by an exceptional series of theater, fair and dance organs; a world-class selection of historic music boxes; and, one of the largest compilations of major orchestrion pieces ever to be offered at auction. Among a long list of notable highlights: a 30 rank Wurlitzer Residential Pipe organ, formerly displayed in the Wurlitzer home in Ohio; an art deco-styled Mortier dance organ; and an ornate Gaudin 125-Key Organ. Another jewel of the collection, an exceptional, hand-built carousel, specially commissioned and constructed by the Milhous brothers over a four-year period.  Complete with its own Wurlitzer organ, this exquisite piece features an extraordinary menagerie of horses and other animals plus two gondolas, all hand-carved in basswood.

The collection is rounded out by an eclectic assortment of other collectibles, ranging from ornate hall and tower clocks to such decorative art pieces as Tiffany lamps and various artworks, as well as a diverse series of petroliana, neon and porcelain signs, unique gasoline-powered tether cars and models, and a large range of firearms from the late 19th century.
